What glutathione is and why it matters after 35
Glutathione has a reputation problem. Online it is sold as a "glow drip," a whitening pill, or a fix for feeling tired. Underneath the marketing is a genuinely important molecule with a century of biochemistry behind it, and a much narrower set of things it has been shown to do in people. This guide is about that narrower set.
Glutathione is a tripeptide, three amino acids (glutamate, cysteine, and glycine) joined in a slightly unusual way. Every cell in your body makes it, in quantities large enough to make it the most abundant small thiol in human cells. The sulfur atom in its cysteine is the working part: it hands off electrons to unstable molecules before they can damage membranes, proteins, or the cell's machinery. Frederick Gowland Hopkins isolated it at Cambridge in 1921; a century later it is one of the most studied molecules in biology.
Here is the part that matters past your mid-thirties. Glutathione levels decline with age, and so does the rate at which cells make more. A 2011 Baylor College of Medicine study measured both in older adults against young controls and found both substantially lower. When the older subjects were given cysteine and glycine, the rate-limiting building blocks, their levels rose back to the young range within about two weeks. The machinery was intact; it was short on raw material. That study used oral precursors, not injections, but it established the central fact: the decline is a supply problem, and supply can be restored.
Add the things that drain glutathione faster than age alone: poor sleep, alcohol, sustained stress, hard training, and sun. Why it touches skin tone
Your skin makes two families of pigment: eumelanin (brown to black) and pheomelanin (yellow to red). The enzyme tyrosinase sits at the start of both. Glutathione dampens tyrosinase and, by keeping cysteine available, nudges production toward the pheomelanin branch. It also mops up the reactive molecules that ultraviolet light generates in skin, one of the triggers for pigment cells to ramp up. The skin-tone evidence, honestly
This is where most articles either oversell or dismiss. The truthful position is in between, so here is the actual record.
The 2012 Thai trial. Sixty medical students took 500 mg of oral glutathione or placebo daily for four weeks. Melanin index fell at all six measured sites in the glutathione group, but the drop was statistically significant versus placebo at only two, one side of the face and the sun-exposed forearm, measured by instrument rather than by eye. Short, young, and oral, but randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled, and the reason the topic is taken seriously at all.

The 2017 Bangkok trial. Sixty healthy women took 250 mg of oral glutathione (reduced or oxidized form) or placebo daily for twelve weeks. Melanin index and UV spots trended lower than placebo in both glutathione groups, the reduced-glutathione group showed a significant reduction in wrinkles at some sites, and elasticity showed only a trend toward improvement. The 2019 systematic review. Researchers pooled four studies and found a trend, lower melanin index at sun-exposed sites with oral or topical glutathione versus placebo and no effect at sun-protected sites, but called the overall evidence inconclusive because of study quality and inconsistent findings. The reviews also note that duration of treatment and how long any effect lasts after stopping remain unanswered. Suggestive, not settled. A 2016 dermatology review was sharper about intravenous glutathione specifically: IV "whitening" drips are widely sold with almost no published safety or efficacy data behind them.

What this adds up to
Glutathione has a plausible mechanism and a handful of small, short, mostly oral trials showing a modest evening of skin tone at sun-exposed sites. There are no large trials of subcutaneous glutathione for skin. What we tell patients: expect a gradual, subtle improvement in evenness and brightness over two to three months, mostly on the face, neck, chest, and hands. Do not expect a shade change, and do not expect it to replace sunscreen.
One more thing to say plainly. Glutathione is not a treatment for any skin condition. If you have a patch of pigmentation you are worried about, a dermatologist should look at it first. What glutathione offers is a cosmetic, whole-body nudge toward an even complexion in healthy skin, a smaller claim than the internet makes and a more honest one. Why injection instead of a capsule
If the trials above were oral, why does Vael prescribe an injection? Because the oral route is unreliable, and the research shows it in both directions.
Glutathione is a fragile peptide. An enzyme in the intestinal lining, gamma-glutamyltransferase, pulls it apart before much of it is absorbed intact. In a 2011 controlled trial, healthy adults took 500 mg of oral glutathione twice a day for four weeks; blood glutathione and markers of oxidative stress did not change. A larger 2015 trial found the opposite: after six months of daily dosing, blood stores rose by roughly a third at the higher dose. Read together: swallowed glutathione sometimes works, slowly, at high doses, over months, and sometimes does nothing measurable. That inconsistency is the problem.

A subcutaneous injection skips the gut entirely. The intact molecule enters the tissue under the skin and from there the bloodstream, at a dose your prescription sets rather than one your digestion decides. That is why there is no oral glutathione in the Vael catalog. What 8 to 12 weeks tends to look like
Glutathione does not act like a peel. Skin turns over on a roughly monthly cycle, so anything that changes what pigment cells produce shows up one cycle at a time. This is a general pattern drawn from the trial durations above and from what patients describe, not a guarantee.

Side effects, storage, and who should wait
For a molecule your own cells make in quantity, glutathione is well tolerated. What we see in practice is minor and local: a small bump, redness, or tenderness at the injection site that clears within a day. Rotating between the abdomen, thigh, and upper arm keeps that to a minimum. Rarely, women report a mild headache in the first week. Serious reactions at standard subcutaneous doses are uncommon.
The exclusions are specific. G6PD deficiency, an inherited enzyme condition more common in people of Mediterranean, African, and Southeast Asian descent, is a firm no; glutathione in that setting carries a risk of red blood cell breakdown, and the screening asks about it directly. Active chemotherapy is another: many chemotherapy drugs work by generating oxidative stress in cancer cells, and an antioxidant could theoretically blunt them, so nothing starts without an oncologist's say-so. Pregnancy and breastfeeding rule it out for lack of safety data. Women on immunosuppressive medication should raise it with their prescribing physician first.

Storage: the one thing glutathione is fussy about
Glutathione is light-sensitive.
